The new of the terrorist attack in Orlando broke early Sunday morning, while most of use were asleep. I’ll leave it for the Monday Morning Quarterbacks to second and third guess the actions of the police. Certainly many internet heroes could have done better. If only they’d been able to pass the examination to get hired as police officers, that is.
As is always the case, there was a mixture of confusion and wishful thinking in the early reports. An early tweet from the BBC, sent along by a friend of mine who lives in England, pointed towards a white male, far right white supremacist as the killer. Almost simultaneously, the BBC website was saying that the authorities over here in the colonies were saying that terrorism was likely. Now, a white male far right white supremacist can indeed perpetrate an act of terror. We’ve seen a couple of those here in the United States. Sadly though, these days when you hear of a terror attack, the smart money is that it’s an act of an Islamofascist.
Just as the attacks in Paris were committed by Islamofascists, this one was committed by a home grown Islamofascist.
Part of the confusion, or misdirection perhaps, was due to the fact that the Pulse nightclub caters to a LGBT clientele. Which has lead to many, or at least some people misunderstanding what happened. This was NOT an attack by a homophobic person who just happens to be a Muslim and was enraged by seeing two men kissing. This was an attack by a Islamofascist terrorist who scouted out at least one other venue in the Orlando area. For whatever reason, probably less security, he decided to pick a place where a lot of people would be congregating, there would be a lot of background noise, it was very unlikely that anyone but a police officer doing security would be armed, and just happened to be a group that the holy book of his religion says should be murdered due to the sexual preferences. Making it a LGBT “hate crime” muddies the waters and draws attention away from the real cause and what needs to be done to prevent further similar attacks.
We now come to find out that his now widow helped him scout out locations, was with him when he bought ammunition, and knew well in advance where and when he planned to attack. I think she should be spending a lot of time in prison. Like the rest of her miserable life.
The other thing that this was not, was a good argument for gun control, magazine and “assault weapons” bans, or even restrictions on who can buy guns when. I think that some sort of “no fly gun ban” law will pass and be signed into law. It will make everyone feel like the government is “doing something” to stop terrorists from getting semi automatic rifles.
Only it won’t. There are multiple reasons for this. First, these restrictions will only apply to the purchase of rifles from licensed dealers. Person to person sales are not regulated in most of the country, so in many states a person can buy a gun of any type from another person without any government intervention. Once that becomes glaring obvious (to the few who don’t already realize it), we’ll see a hue and cry for some sort of nationwide background check and gun registry. Which, of course will do not one single thing to stop people who want to commit crimes from being able to do so.
Since the government has failed dismally to stop drugs and illegal (excuse me) undocumented guests from coming into the country, there is absolutely no reason to think that the same smugglers can get guns of every type into the country quite easily. If you doubt me, look at France. That nation has some of the toughest gun control laws on the planet and yet Islamofascists had absolutely no trouble getting real assault rifles and plenty of ammunition into the country to kill a large number of people. There’s no reason to think that won’t happen here.
Then there is the time honored method of getting guns. Steal them. Remember the Tsarnaev brothers “Joker” and “Speed Bump”? They murdered a police officer so that they could steal his gun. They failed to get the gun, but others will be more successful. Personally, I’ll be a lot less eager to bring one of my AR pattern rifles to my gun club unless I know that there are others around. My club is fairly secure, but the ranges are outside, the gate is only designed to keep cars out, and the range itself has no fence around it. Someone who is is a mind to, can walk in, wait for someone to show up with an AR pattern rifle, kill them, and take the rifle. It doesn’t even have to be an AR pattern rifle as there are plenty of other semi auto rifles with magazines that will kill people quite nicely. The two murderers from Columbine didn’t killed most of their victims with shotguns and a handgun, although that was not their original plan.
Additional note: Discussing this with a friend of mine, and he pointed out another method to obtain weapons. As happened with the Columbine murderers, someone who can’t buy a weapon can always enlist the help of someone who can buy weapons. A straw purchase will make that person an accomplice, but as we’ve seen many time before, that doesn’t seem to bother a lot of people.
Which brings me to the next reason no sort of gun, magazine, or ammunition ban will work. Bombs are far more efficient at killing lots of people. No matter how many people you shoot, you are not going to kill them all before your luck runs out. The Columbine murderers planned to use home made explosives to blow up the high school and kill up to 500 people. The guns they brought along were intended to kill any survivors as they came out of the school. Fortunately, they were inept bomb makers. The Tsarnaev brothers were slightly better, but they picked the wrong time and location to detonate their bombs. Dumb luck, but dumb luck that resulted in far fewer deaths than might have happened.
Do I need to mention the Murrah Federal Building bombing? I think not, because you get the point.
Do I need to mention flying airliners into buildings? Nah, you remember that.
The inanimate object is not the weapon. The malice in the heart and mind of the murderer is the weapon, what tool he uses to carry out his plan is not that important.
When all of the hysteria, politicking, not letting a crisis go to a wasting, and media hype die down, we are going to be left with a harsh reality.
The government is paralyzed with fear at the prospect of being labeled Islamophobic. As a result, federal, state, and local investigative and law enforcement agencies are prevented from fully investigating potential terrorists and potential crimes. The Orlando shooter, the Tsarnaev brothers, the San Bernadino shooters, and others were at various times on the radar of a number of law enforcement agencies. Despite that, they were not being actively investigated or even considered for investigation at the time they committed their Acts of War against Americans on American soil.
A faction of Islam, call it by any name, has declared war on America and has attacked America.
The nation and it’s leaders need to decide how much of this we can “absorb” and at what point we are going to treat this war like a war and not like a bank robbery.
That applies to the incumbent in the White House, the Congress, and the two people who want to be our next President.
. It’s not a matter of politics, it’s a matter of national survival.
I just hope that they have the will to do what needs to be done.
Anything less will mean that those people in Orlando died for nothing at all.
