The Name Game

A small number of people have pointed out to me that the title of the blog is no longer quite accurate. “No longer operative” as a politician once said, shortly before he was indicted for perjury. I’ve been thinking about that, but I haven’t really had any ideas for a better name. This morning, whilst riding my bicycle on my usual circuit, inspiration struck me.

Not to long ago a friend sent me one of these T shirts in jest of my new status. Very funny, I said, but there is more than a little truth to this. More and more I find my stories of ye olde days in EMS starting this way, “Back about 15, no 20, damnit 25 years ago…”¬†and I go on to tell story about a guy that I worked with in the last century and who my listener doesn’t even know. I’ve even had some conversations that started this way, “I was working with your father on Ambulance…” I retired when I realized that there was a distinct possibility that the stories would very soon start out “I was working with your Grandfather on Ambulance….”

Uh, yeah, it was time to go. While the stories were mostly true, pretty funny, and many people found them entertaining, I was starting to think of myself as an old, broken down, paramedic reliving tales of yesteryear.

So, now that I’m retired from active EMS duty and doing back room stuff, I’m not only not Too Old To Work, but I am in a very real sense retired.

So, from¬† now on, or as soon as I can find out how to change the title screen, this blog will be known as “EMS Artifact”. I was going to make it “EMS Artifact, start conversations at your own risk”, but that would be even longer than “Too Old To Work, To Young To Retire”. I’ll leave the URL as is, so you won’t have to change that if you link to me, just the description. Don’t change that either if you don’t want to, just don’t be surprised if the header is changed.

Now, I need to find someone with artistic talent because I have an idea for a graphic to go with the title. What I’d like is a drawing of an old guy in a rocking chair, wearing a uniform with a Star of Life patch and the word “Paramedic” on it. If he’s smoking a cigar, all the better. I’d also like a comment balloon with “Back about 15, no 20, uh, damnit 25 years ago…” above the drawing. If you have that sort of talent or know someone who does, email me.

Oh, I’m also going to sticky this to the top for a few days so people don’t get too disoriented!

  1. One of these days, we will employ people who can tell stories that start that way for the sole purpose of hearing those stories.

I need to get one of those shirts for Flash.
